ArmInfo. The construction timelines for nuclear power plants with small modular reactors are much shorter than for traditional units. RA Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan stated this at a briefing on April 30, responding to a question about the Civil Contract party's election platform, which stipulates that a construction technology must be selected by the end of 2027.
The Prime Minister believes that an SMR nuclear power plant can be built on schedule by 2036.
The construction timelines for small modular nuclear power plants are typically 2-4 years, which is faster than for traditional nuclear power plants (7-10 years) due to the modular assembly at the factory. The first units are already operating, and widespread commercial deployment is planned for the next 10-20 years. Meanwhile, Armenia plans to decide on the design of the new plant and the country of manufacture only in 2027. Work is ongoing at the current nuclear power plant to extend its service life until 2036. By that time, a new nuclear power plant should be built in Armenia.
