ArmInfo. From September 15 to 19, 2025, the 69th session of the General Conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) was held in Vienna. A delegation from Armenia also participated in the conference, according to a statement from the Armenian Nuclear Power Plant press service.
The General Conference is one of the most important annual events in nuclear energy and safety, bringing together representatives of member states to discuss global challenges, innovative solutions, and prospects for international cooperation. The Armenian delegation was led by Andranik Hovhannisyan, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Armenia to Austria and the Slovak Republic. The delegation also included Vahe Grigoryan, Deputy Chairman of the Nuclear Safety Regulatory Committee of the Republic of Armenia; Eduard Martirosyan, Director General of ANPP CJSC; Movses Vardanyan, First Deputy Director General of ANPP CJSC and Director of ANPP; Vahram Petrosyan, Director General of the ARMATOM Research Institute; and Arsen Mikaelyan, Advisor to the Permanent Mission of the Republic of Armenia.
During the conference, ANPP representatives presented Armenia's strategic priorities aimed at extending the life of the existing nuclear power plant, plans for the construction of new nuclear units, and maintaining the highest safety standards. Programs implemented jointly with the IAEA and planned for the coming years were also discussed, including expert missions and seismic safety assessment initiatives. During the session, the Armenian delegation participated in several bilateral meetings, during which the importance of strengthening international cooperation, exchanging experience, and enhancing regional nuclear safety was emphasized. Armenia's presence at the General Conference once again underscored the country's commitment to the peaceful and safe use of nuclear energy, energy independence, and sustainable development. The ANPP, a key element of Armenia's energy system, continues to serve as a reliable partner and an important platform for international cooperation.
It is worth noting that Armenia has been a member of the IAEA since 1993. The Agency oversees the country's only operating nuclear facility. Cooperation with the IAEA in the peaceful use of nuclear energy is developing effectively not only in nuclear energy but also in nuclear medicine and other areas of the country's economy.
