Minister of Economy: The price of Russian gas for Armenia is not as low as it seems

ArmInfo. The price of Russian gas for Armenia is far from as low as it appears. The RA Minister of Economy stated this on November 6 at hearings on the draft 2027 state budget, which are taking place in the committees of the National Assembly of the Republic of Armenia.

According to him, the current gas price is essentially compensation for the contributions Armenia makes to the common fund of the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) countries. The minister noted that for several years now, the republic's contributions to the general budget of the EAEU have been almost twice as high as the amount it receives in return, and this problem needs to be addressed.

Nevertheless, the minister noted that, in the EAEU, Armenia has a huge market for its products. Armenia also attracts manufacturers from the Union, as evidenced by the wide range of goods produced in Russia and other EAEU countries. "Just 10 years ago, we witnessed a situation where our store shelves were filled with goods produced overwhelmingly in Armenia, along with one or two products from Russia and one from the EU. Today, we see significantly larger volumes of goods from Russia," the minister emphasized.

As a reminder, Russia supplies natural gas to Armenia at a fixed price of $177.5 per 1,000 cubic meters. This price is stipulated in the current agreement. In 2025, the republic transferred approximately $319 million to the general budget in the form of import customs duties to the EAEU, while approximately $175 million was distributed back to Armenia (the negative balance amounted to approximately $144 million). In 2024, it transferred approximately $323 million and received approximately $189 million. This shows that Armenia contributes more funds to the union through customs duties than it receives back from the general distribution.
