ArmInfo. Wizz Air is not currently considering operating flights from Syunik Airport. This was stated by WizzAir Chief Commercial Officer Jan Malin during a press conference on September 8, answering a question from an ArmInfo correspondent.
Noting that WizzAir already operates flights from Shirak Airport (Gyumri) to Cyprus, he emphasized that the airline intends to primarily focus on strengthening its position in Yerevan. In this regard, Malin shared that WizzAir is considering expanding its flight network from Yerevan not only to European destinations, but also to regional ones.
"That is, our first step is to strengthen our position in Yerevan, and then we will discuss with the government the possibility of operating flights from other airports in Armenia," the commercial director said.
As a reminder, days earlier at the international Tour Expo exhibition, Karen Vardanyan, director of Syunik Airport and NovAir Airlines, answered a question from an ArmInfo correspondent and stated that, as part of the process of obtaining international status, Syunik Airport is ready to provide its platform to various airlines for the purpose of developing new destinations.
It is worth noting that from 2017 to 2020, Syunik Airport was completely modernized - in particular, a new modern passenger terminal was built, the runway was reconstructed, the latest navigation systems were installed. In 2020, the airport received an operating certificate. On August 19, 2023, the first official flight from Yerevan was carried out, and on August 21, 2023, regular passenger transportation began. If in 2023 25 flights were carried out and the total number of passengers was 207 people, then in 2026 2,932 passengers have already been transported and 113 flights were performed. For the whole of 2025, the airline carried out 98 flights and transported 2,105 passengers, in 2024 - 76 flights and 1,346 passengers. It should also be noted that the Zangezur Copper and Molybdenum Plant (ZCMK) played a major role in the development of the airport. In particular, the costs of constructing the airport building, creating infrastructure, and purchasing the necessary equipment were financed by ZMMC. The plant continues to finance the costs of operating and maintaining the Syunik airport, as well as paying wages to its employees.
