Pashinyan: Decision on new nuclear power plant expected soon amid  energy strategy review

ArmInfo. At this stage, a final decision regarding a new nuclear power plant has yet to be reached, but a resolution is expected in the near future, as stated  by Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan during a briefing on August 20.

According to the Prime Minister, the country's current energy  development strategy requires a comprehensive review in light of  recent technological advancements. Pashinyan noted that two  artificial intelligence (AI) manufacturing facilities have already  begun operations in Armenia. While these enterprises are currently  adequately powered, the government is looking ahead to potential  challenges.

During a recent meeting with investors, Pashinyan was informed that  upcoming AI projects could trigger a significant energy deficit, as  these facilities consume vast amounts of electricity. "We must  revisit our energy development strategy, weighing the construction of  new generation facilities—including a nuclear power plant—against  approved investment programs aimed at AI development," the head of  government stated. He emphasized the necessity of conducting detailed  research into the projected growth of the AI sector to inform  decisions regarding new power generation infrastructure.

Recall, Armenia has previously committed to utilizing Small Modular  Reactor (SMR) technology for the expansion of its nuclear energy  capacity. Prime Minister Pashinyan confirmed that the country is  moving toward implementing SMRs to supplement or eventually replace  existing facilities. The Armenian government is currently evaluating  technological proposals from various international partners,  including the United States and Russia. Experts and relevant  authorities are assessing the grid advantages of smaller modules—such  as multiple 50 MW units—compared to the conventional, large-scale  nuclear power plants.
