ArmInfo. On June 23, RA Minister of Education, Science, Culture, and Sports Zhanna Andreasyan received a delegation from the international digital platform OpenAI, which arrived in Armenia to present the ChatGPT Edu tool. This was reported by the MESKS press service.
At the beginning of the new academic year, Armenia's educational, engineering, and scientific research communities will receive approximately 50,000 free subscriptions as a result of a collaboration between MESKS, OpenAI, and Firebird. The necessary preparatory work and training courses should be completed by September to ensure the process can begin in the new academic year.
Welcoming the guests, Zhanna Andreasyan noted that in recent years, initiatives aimed at applying artificial intelligence (AI) and developing AI literacy have been consistently expanding in the Armenian education system. According to the Minister, this partnership is of great importance for the Armenian education system, as the country has already established a stable foundation for the development of education and the application of AI.
The "Generation of Artificial Intelligence" and "STEP.ai" educational programs are successfully implemented in general education schools, promoting the development of students' fundamental knowledge of AI, creative thinking, and technological skills, as well as the safe, responsible, and effective use of AI tools.
Zhanna Andreasyan emphasized that the "Generation of Artificial Intelligence" program, implemented in collaboration with the FAST Foundation, has already achieved tangible results and received international recognition. Some program participants have achieved success and won awards in various international competitions, demonstrating the initiative's effectiveness.
Educational programs on artificial intelligence are also being implemented at the secondary vocational and higher education levels. Starting in September 2026, ESU will introduce a new bachelor's degree program in Artificial Intelligence.
Touching on the development prospects of this field, Zhanna Andreasyan noted that major artificial intelligence initiatives being implemented in Armenia are creating new opportunities for deepening cooperation between education, science, and the economy, facilitating the country's engagement in international technological processes. She assessed that these developments significantly expand the capabilities of the education system and create favorable conditions for the development of international relations. The Minister expressed confidence that the success of any technological initiative is determined by the development of human potential. In this regard, capacity building within the educational community, professional training, and ongoing support are particularly important, enabling the full utilization of artificial intelligence tools to improve the quality of education.
Alina Leon, a researcher at the OpenAI Platform Partnership, emphasized the importance of the partnership with Armenia, noting that the main areas of cooperation include promoting the responsible and safe use of artificial intelligence in the education system, as well as developing the skills of teachers and students in the effective use of technological tools.
Summing up the meeting, Zhanna Andreasyan noted that the ChatGPT Edu platform for educational institutions will become an effective tool both in higher education for faculty and students, and in the general education sector for teachers and high school students. She emphasized the importance of not only implementing the technology but also developing a comprehensive policy for it, including regulations, risk management mechanisms, and principles of safe use.
It should be noted that during the initial phase of the initiative, in the 2026-2027 academic year, access to the ChatGPT Edu platform will be provided with financial support from Firebird. After assessing the project's effectiveness and its impact on learning outcomes, the possibility of government funding will be considered with the goal of incorporating it as a sustainable and long-term component of the national education system.
