RA National Body for Standardization and Metrology to join BIPM, OIML

ArmInfo.  The National Body for Standardization and Metrology CJSC will become a member of the International Bureau of Weights and Measures (BIPM) and a corresponding member of the International Organization of Legal Metrology (OIML). The National Assembly of the Republic of Armenia  ratified the agreements with these international organizations at its  plenary session on February 11.

Presenting the ratification documents, RA Minister of Economy Gevorg  Papoyan stated that the first agreement was signed on March 18 of  last year, and the second on April 2, 2025. The minister recalled  that the National Body for Standardization and Metrology CJSC  currently ensures the uniformity of measurements throughout the  Republic of Armenia, which is a fundamental pillar of high-quality  national economic infrastructure. The company carries out  metrological control of measuring instruments: inspection,  examination, testing, and type certification. Metrological control  not only ensures the safety of RA citizens from a health perspective,  but also regulates trade relations between consumers and sellers.

Papoyan continued that membership in international metrology  organizations is key to the development of a system for ensuring  measurement uniformity in the Republic of Armenia, regulating trade  relations between producers and consumers, and disseminating  innovations. It is proposed to facilitate the process of CJSC's  accession as an associate and corresponding member of these two  authoritative international organizations.

The Society's membership in international metrology organizations,  particularly the OIML (International Organization of Legal Metrology)  and the BIPM (International Bureau of Weights and Measures), has a  number of important strategic, economic, and technical  justifications. From an economic perspective, this will ensure the  development of international trade, as membership in the OIML and  BIPM guarantees the international comparability of measurements. This  is important for reducing technical barriers in export and import  processes, creating a level playing field, allowing Armenian  manufacturers to enter foreign markets without duplicating test or  measurement certificates. Furthermore, this membership will create  investment attractiveness by increasing confidence in the economic  environment, facilitating investment through a measurement system  that complies with international metrological requirements.

From a technical and scientific perspective, membership will enhance  measurement accuracy and harmonize the national measurement system  with international standards.

From an institutional perspective, membership will strengthen legal  metrology and help improve the legal metrology sector by creating a  reliable and transparent measurement system. Membership will also  ensure the sector's compliance with EU requirements.
