ArmInfo. On February 5, at its regular meeting, the Armenian government established the quantities and deadlines for commercial fish and crayfish catches in Lake Sevan in 2026, as well as the conditions and requirements for organizing commercial fishing.
As stated in the explanatory note to the document, the Scientific Center of Zoology and Hydroecology of the National Academy of Sciences annually conducts an inventory of fish and crayfish stocks in Lake Sevan and its catchment basin, and based on the results, proposes commercial fishing volumes.
The development of this regulatory act was based on a report submitted by the Scientific Center on the results of research conducted in Lake Sevan in 2025, where, as of October 2025, the total whitefish stock in Lake Sevan amounted to 3,591.8 tons, of which 1,373.9 tons were commercial stocks. The scientific center proposed a quota of 550 tons for commercial whitefish fishing in 2026, representing 40% of the commercial stock.
Experts conducted a scientific fishery in Lake Sevan from December 10, 2024, to January 20, 2025, resulting in a pre-spawning/spawning period from November 20, 2026, to February 1, 2027.
The adoption of the draft government resolution envisages an increase in state budget revenues of approximately 110 million drams, due to the payment of fees for the use of nature, as established by the tax legislation of the Republic of Armenia.
