Armenian steel industry stuck in recession

ArmInfo. The metallurgy industry of Armenia lingered in the decline with an acceleration to 17.2% in  H1 2023 from 7% a year earlier. This is evidenced by the data of the RA Statistical Committee.

In particular, the y-o-y decline in the production of copper  concentrate accelerated from 19.3% to 23.3%, with a volume of 125,758  thousand tons provided for H1 2023. In June alone, the volume of  copper concentrate production decreased by 6.7%, amounting to 23.7  thousand tons.  The y-o-y decline in zinc concentrate production  accelerated from 11% to 13.7%, with a volume of 4,459 thousand tons.  In June, the volume of production of zinc concentrate amounted to 652  tons, with an acceleration of the decline from 11.3% in May to 36.2%  in June.

The production of molybdenum concentrate decreased by 8.4% per annum  - to 10.589 thousand tons, against a decline of 3.1% a year earlier.  At the same time, in June alone, the growth in molybdenum concentrate  production slowed down significantly from May's 18.7% to June's  miserable 0.3%, amounting to 2.238 thousand tons.

The production of ferromolybdenum in Armenia showed a decline in the  reporting period by 9% per annum - to 4.436 thousand tons, against an  increase of 13.9% a year earlier. And on a monthly term, the dynamics  of ferromolybdenum production reversed from the May 9.6% growth to  the June 3.5% decline, amounting to 754.4 tons.

The production of steel pipes in H1 2023 increased by 56.3% per annum  (against a decline of 25.5% in the same period in 2022), amounting to  8.649 thousand tons. Moreover, over the month, the growth in the  production of steel pipes accelerated sharply from 8% in May to 47%  in June, amounting to 2,290 thousand tons.

Production of aluminum foil for the reporting period decreased by  14.4% per annum (against 5.5% decline a year earlier), amounting to  13.708 thousand tons. In just a month, the production of aluminum  foil accelerated in the decline to 28% in June from 11.3% in May,  amounting to 1,536 thousand tons.

Castings from unalloyed (carbon) steel in the amount of 3,020  thousand tons were produced during the reporting period. In June  alone, 44.2 tons were produced, which is almost 3-fold less than the  May volume.  Meanwhile, it is worth noting that the report of the RA  Statistical Committee for January-June 2023 does not include data on  the output of these products for the same period in 2022, as a result  of which the y-o-y dynamics is not provided. However, a year ago, in  January-June 2022, the report of the Statistical Committee included  the volume of production of castings from non-alloyed (carbon) steel  and then indicated 67.290 thousand tons (with y-o-y increase of 50%).

It should be noted that according to customs data, all metals  produced in Armenia are exported, mainly to Europe and the United  States.
